Skinamarink (2022) -
"Two children wake up in the middle of the night to find their father is missing, and all the windows and doors in their home have vanished."
First watch I absolutely hated this movie. It was midday and outside in my garage. Regardless of what I'm about to say next, the movie is a rather slow and boring film that works best as a short film.
BUT, I watched this again the other night in a pitch black room with all the doors and closets open. This made the experience way more enjoyable despite its dragging run-time. Having these dark doorways, emulated the film. The arches and door ways you can't see into; only shadows from the TV on screen creating identical shadows in my own room, making these dark doorways appear to have their own Boogeymen inside. It really made me think back to when I was a kid at a sleepover at a friend's house.
You're in a place you're completely unfamiliar with and you're in a sleeping bag on the living room floor. You're the last one to fall asleep and your eyes and mind wander around the room. You're on the floor so all you can see is the darkness under the sofa, the fibers in the carpet closeup, the door frame from below. These unfamiliar spaces you don't typically see as an adult, but you're a kid in an unfamiliar house, staring at unfamiliar things and thinking about the unfamiliar darkness that's the hallway or the bedroom door left open.
You don't know what's in there. It's not your house. So you stay content on the floor and you're better off not knowing. You'll hold it and use the bathroom in the morning.
