Lo (2009)
Every once in awhile you're reminded of a movie that sticks with you just because of its unique story telling and this film, Lo, by Travis Betz is so intrinsically quirky and eccentric that I've never forgotten it.
I had seen it years ago a few times on Netflix, trying to show it to anyone that would sit down with me, and it kind of disappeared. I don't know a single soul who's watched it but I looked everywhere for until recently this past weekend I found a thread mentioning it and it was the first thing I watched that day. I believe it is available for free on Youtube if you feel so inclined
It's a great little film about a man in love with a woman he meets by odd circumstances who's abducted by a demon, so he summons Lo to bring her back from hell.
The great part about this is it's experimentation on a low budget, distinctly told in a dark room and stage play presentation. The demons Lo and Jeez are smartly funny and covered in fantastic practical makeup.
Some might be off put by what it's trying to achieve, but I find the movie to have a very endearing quality to it's ambitiousness. Every bit of it is amusing, creative and whimsical. But for all its merits, I'd have wished it gained more of a cult following, but I'm hard pressed to find fans, let alone anyone who's seen it. I could really see the director rewrite this as a stage play and perform it live, it's that good and with more horror themed stage plays and musicals such as Evil Dead: The Musical and Silence of the Lambs: The Musical, this has the makings for something extremely well done and entertaining at a theater level.
I highly recommend giving this a watch, it uniquely stands on its own two feet and needs a bit more credit where credit is deserved.
